HIGHLIGHTS: -Today we learned how to draw a duck. We noticed that our ducks grew a lot! -We continue to observe our ducklings and note all the changes. Ask me what I noticed today. -We read another version of the Ugly Duckling today, and we wrote about the problem and solution. -We started to look at homes that were destroyed by natural disasters. This will help us build our 3 little pig houses later this week. -We are still working on showing responsibility in order to care for the ducks and hold them. -We worked on our morning math, ask me what we did. We are required to have procedures in place in the event of emergencies such as: a fire, a bomb threat, an intruder moving in the building, or a threat outside the building. Each of these potential situations requires different actions by staff to organize for maximum safety and security of all students. Several times during the year our schools are required to hold fire drills allowing students and staff to practice evacuation procedures. We do this to ensure the safety of all students in the event of such an emergency. These practice drills are done in a calm and orderly manner at a time in a school’s schedule that provides a variety of circumstances that could be encountered during a real fire. For example, some classes will be taking Physical Education; some may be dispersed into other classrooms. School fires are rare, but when they do happen they do so without warning and we must be prepared to respond under all conditions. In the same way that we practice fire drills, we will practice a lockdown drill on Thursday April 16 in the afternoon. A lockdown is a procedure we would use if an intruder were to enter the building. The procedures all schools are expected to follow include closing and locking all inside and outside doors and keeping staff and students in their rooms. The role of everyone in the building is to remain quiet and calm until they are all notified of “All Clear.” No one is allowed to enter or leave the building during a lockdown procedure. The procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Knowing this procedure is relatively new to our younger students and their parents, we take extra care in each classroom to introduce the topic thoughtfully. Teachers will meet with their classes to discuss the routines of going to a safe spot in the classroom, sitting quietly and taking silent attendance. Discussions also include what to do if you are out of the classroom during a lockdown. An announcement will be made to “Lockdown the classrooms” and children will move into their safe place in their room for approximately 5-10 minutes. We will keep the practice as simple and calm as possible. Administration goes door to door and opens the classes to mark the end of the drill.
